Title: Announcing Door Talk!
Date: Fri, Dec 19th, 2008 10:34:01 am
Content: Welcome to the inaugural BLOG of Door Talk - an open forum for those interested in the custom hollow metal industry, from end-users, contract hardware distributors, architects, spec writers, engineers, to sales and marketing personnel.
Upcoming Door Talk Blogs will discuss many relevant industry issues starting with the industry's transformation from "paper + pencil" to hi-tech estimating and detailing software. Ultimately, Door Talk will go where the readership directs us by their commentary and questions.
Since this is the inaugural issue, we would like to share with you why Secmet Door Talk is a reliable, knowledgeable industry source for the custom hollow metal issues.
First and foremost, Security Metal Products is a family owned and operated custom hollow metal company. Our door manufacturing heritage goes back four generations to 1914.
Secondly, we don't have hidden agendas, like tying in any particular hardware offerings. To us, a hardware prep is just a hole, precisely placed where the hardware manufacturer needs it for it to be fully operable. So, you will not hear us trying to "package" any particular hardware brands with our hollow metal doors or frames.
Thirdly, it's about experience, knowledge and engineering!
About More than the Money.
The majority of Security Metal's core employees have been with the company for over 10 years, some as many as 25, 35, 45 years. And although we are generously compensated for our efforts, the unique world of custom hollow metal-its increasingly stringent code requirements, complex hardware permutations, fierce industry competition, time-consuming coordination with distributors, consultants, government inspectors, architects, builders, and plain old Plumber Joes-is constantly in flux.
Factor in the external forces over which we have no control, like the troubled economy, rising steel and fuel costs, the uncertain impact of shrinking-world events, and our business-the manufacture of standard and custom hollow metal doors and frames-can be as frustrating as it is challenging, as crazy-making as it is exciting. So it's gotta be about more than the money, right?
Then What Is It?
What is it then-besides a steady paycheck-that keeps SMP's employees opening the office door Monday after Friday after Monday?
- Pride! - Pride in the company's dedication to providing customers across the US and worldwide with quality products at an affordable price!
- Knowledge! - The knowledge that we continue to be on the cutting edge of a wide array of specialty products-
- sound rated acoustical,
- stainless steel,
- bullet resistant,
- blast/pressure resistant, and
- watertight sanitary doors and frames, all supported by our
- registry in UL and our integral participation in such industry associations as NAAMM, and SDI.
Okay, that's an impressive product list guaranteed to generate big employee pride, but consider another "product list," maybe less tangible but just as impressive (to us, anyway): Security Metal Products (SMP) Values.
Security Metal's Values
When Mike and Jim Hirsch (for more about the Hirsch family, see SMP overview) inaugurated a Management Action Program (MAP) in 1998 to better define Security Metal's corporate identity, to herd its hollow metal door cats toward the goal of growing the company while galvanizing their managerial-level people into a more coherent whole, everybody's definitions of top core values were considered and everybody voted for the Top 5. True democracy at work! And as the winning values have been inculcated into the company's hollow metal DNA, SMP's employees and more importantly, our customers-are proving to be the real winners.
So What?
So just what are Security Metal's Top 5 corporate values?
- Teamwork
- Integrity
- Competence
- Respect
- Accountability
Together we hammered out the following definitions:
Teamwork: Working together to achieve a common goal; making personal and group sacrifices to achieve those goals.
Integrity: Honesty; being principled-say what we do; do what we say.
Competence: Having the necessary skills and qualifications to do the job; pursuing ongoing excellence.
Respect: Earned and given by treating each other with professional courtesy and consideration.
Accountability: To the customer, the company, and oneself; monitoring performance so that results are achieved and goals are met.
Bringing the List to Life
Bringing this list to life-from being merely good-looking vision words to result-oriented workplace works in action-is our ongoing commitment, and we continue striving to live up to the core values by which Security Metal chooses to define itself.
Way More than the Money
So, yeah, for SMP's longtime, loyal employees it's about way more than the money. Way more! It's about not taking the customer, the product, and each other, for granted as we design and build
- Acoustic assemblies for the recording industry and performing arts centers as well as the home studio guy;
- Bullet/blast resistant doors and frames for personal security and the DOD/ Homeland Security folks;
- Stainless steel assemblies for labs, hospitals, water treatment and food processing plants, and great looking lobby doors, commercial and private (take a look at our gallery).
- Did we mention sanitary and watertight assemblies for various applications?
- And, finally, our standard custom hollow metal doors and frames used in schools, hospitals, hotels, convention centers, and other applications too numerous to mention here. As the Secmet brochure says, "If you can conceive it, we can build it."
For the Most Part
The "we" in our motto are, of course, SMP's talented, experienced owners and their valuable employees-longtime, loyal and (for the most part-we're only human) happy to open the office door on behalf of our invaluable hollow metal customers Monday after Friday after Monday....
Thanks for joining us for this first edition of Door Talk. Check back soon for a discussion about the submittal process and the evolution of SMP's shop drawings-from tracing paper taped to the drawing board to the industry-changing intricacies of Hollow Metal Designer.
